The Advanced Research Centre for Applied Microbiology [ARCAM]was established by Professor Cowan in 2001. In 2007, the University of the Western Cape approved the elevation of ARCAM to Institute status, as the “Institute for Microbial Biotechnology and Metagenomics” (IMBM). IMBM is housed in a laboratory suite in the Department of Biotechnology at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), Cape Town, South Africa. The laboratory is fully equipped for most state-of-the-art microbial molecular biology and biochemistry, and benefits from its close proximity to the South African National Bioinformatics Institute.
