Joining the IMBM was without a doubt one of the best decisions I could have made. My MSc was filled with amazing mentors and a project that grew my passion for discovery and made each day a fascinating one. I was allowed the freedom to discover, to feed my curiosity and passion, and there was a host of talented post-doctoral fellows who were there for support every step of the way. IMBM provided amazing opportunities to learn, and, to pass knowledge, and I could not have had a better experience anywhere else – it truly was, and still is a ‘place to grow’. The 5 years I spent at IMBM, moulded me into the curious scientist I am today, paved the path of my career and my passion for science continues because of those years.

I joined UWC’s ARCAM in 2005 as a very inexperienced postdoctoral fellow and was a member of the team when IMBM was established in 2007. The culture of excellence at IMBM set the bar for my career moving forward. The high quality of research at IMBM enabled me to grow as a researcher, while at the same time providing opportunities to develop complementary skills, including research project management and science communication. IMBM’s focus on applied research and implementation of research led me to assist with the establishment of the UWC’s Technology Transfer Office in 2010 and 2011. It is the combination of these skills, developed at IMBM, together with the work ethic and culture of excellence exemplified by its leadership that paved my way into becoming a Technology Transfer and Innovation professional today.

My time at IMBM shaped my outlook as a researcher and academic. I was given my first opportunity to speak at an international meeting and spent several months training at a leading lab at the University of Hong Kong. Coming from a lab led by an excellent international researcher, with the very best facilities, enabled me to represent my institution and country proudly. The intellectual skills gained during my time at UWC have no doubt shaped my academic trajectory and given me confidence to take part in any boardroom discussion as a proud UWC alumni.
