Joining the IMBM was without a doubt one of the best decisions I could have made. My MSc was filled with amazing mentors and a project that grew my passion for discovery and made each day a fascinating one. I was allowed the freedom to discover, to feed my curiosity and passion, and there was a host of talented post-doctoral fellows who were there for support every step of the way. IMBM provided amazing opportunities to learn, and, to pass knowledge, and I could not have had a better experience anywhere else – it truly was, and still is a ‘place to grow’. The 5 years I spent at IMBM, moulded me into the curious scientist I am today, paved the path of my career and my passion for science continues because of those years.
Dr D Anderson, Msc & PhD 2007-2012

The opportunity of working with world leaders in their respective fields of research has contributed significantly to the development of my career. The exemplary standard at IMBM is set by positive management and the establishment of a research environment which is conducive for achieving success. The outstanding laboratory facilities and access to cutting-edge technology further facilitates the production of high-class research outputs. I am grateful to the Institute, its leaders and staff for all my experience gained.
Dr C Ohlhoff, PhD 2009-2012

I joined UWC’s ARCAM in 2005 as a very inexperienced postdoctoral fellow and was a member of the team when IMBM was established in 2007. The culture of excellence at IMBM set the bar for my career moving forward. The high quality of research at IMBM enabled me to grow as a researcher, while at the same time providing opportunities to develop complementary skills, including research project management and science communication. IMBM’s focus on applied research and implementation of research led me to assist with the establishment of the UWC’s Technology Transfer Office in 2010 and 2011. It is the combination of these skills, developed at IMBM, together with the work ethic and culture of excellence exemplified by its leadership that paved my way into becoming a Technology Transfer and Innovation professional today.
Dr A Casanueva, 2005-2012

My time at IMBM shaped my outlook as a researcher and academic. I was given my first opportunity to speak at an international meeting and spent several months training at a leading lab at the University of Hong Kong. Coming from a lab led by an excellent international researcher, with the very best facilities, enabled me to represent my institution and country proudly. The intellectual skills gained during my time at UWC have no doubt shaped my academic trajectory and given me confidence to take part in any boardroom discussion as a proud UWC alumni.
Dr T Makhalanyane, PhD 2009-2012

As a postdoctoral researcher I engaged in a large collaborative research project amongst a dynamic international team of students and researchers within a world-class research facility. I will be forever grateful to IMBM for the friendships, experience and opportunities that this period provided in my career.
Dr R Huddy, 2009-2013

Through my involvement on the LEAF project I had the opportunity to move my thinking and research to a more industry-linked space. This experience has shaped my current research career focused around performing large and small research projects directly requested and funded by benefiting industries. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to work with excellent scholars and academics at UWC.
Dr M Smart, 2010-2012

The diversity of people I worked with at IMBM, both foreign and local, will always be remembered as my first entry into the world. The people-exposure I gained at IMBM directly prepared me for the postdoctoral position I occupied in the USA where my immediate colleagues were from every corner of the world.
Dr W Loftie-Eaton, 2010-2012

The IMBM really enabled early stage researchers to develop themselves while simultaneously encouraging the development of a strong working relationship between students and researchers. The academic questions pushed our scientific knowledge and understanding forward while having real life industrial application. The mix of students and researchers from across the globe really helped generate an energetic atmosphere of committed and dynamic scientists striving to push boundaries. My time at IMBM provided me the confidence, experience and oversight to move into a managerial position within industry.
Dr J Cass, 2011
